I think Germany has some of the safest roads in Europe but also has derestricted Autobahns for at least some of their motorway network, so high speeds do not necessarily equal high deaths.
Much as the government has pushed the "speed kills" message for over a decade now, it is simply a blunt and sometimes inaccurate message. Speed can be easily measured however so it is a convenient measure for the government. The real causes of deaths on the road will be far more nuanced (and speed will be the main factor in some of them for sure) but not the main factor in as many as the government will have you believe. Life is full of nuances and shades of grey. Unfortunately we live in a world where people seem to need to jump to immediate and polar opinions. Governments are unfortunately the same......

That's the way in which the various administrations are colluding. We're only a decade or two from mass adoption of self-driving cars. The limiting factor will be the suitability of roads and signal transmission. Big roads are easier to organise in this respect, so we can expect the system to take over on the very roads which today give us some leeway. We'll have to take manual control where no one's bothered to implement the kit, of course, but this will be on streets and lanes where high speeds are largely irrelevant. If you think you are going to be around in 20 years time and want to have fun behind the wheel, this is the time to start investing in track days!

Agree with Wagon Sailor.
We are the test drivers for the self-driving cars of tomorrow. With every new upgraded version of Pilot Assist, the system gets better and more refined. There will come a point (who knows when) where the system's 360 degree visibility, speed of reaction and ability to anticipate the unpredictable, will be manifestly better than the human it will replace. It is the removal of the mistakes by the error prone human that gives Volvo the best chance of its Vision Zero. I will shed more than a tear or two when it happens. But it will happen.

I guess this is a response to the known stupidity of the human race.
Let's take all responsibility away from the common man! They better start searching for other planets to live on, as there isn't going to be enough room on this one if everyone keeps on living... 😂 |

The recent (online) annual ergonomics conference (oh yes - I know how to enjoy myself...) had a good session on autonomous vehicles. A couple of current issues getting attention: how do we design systems that help the driver re-take control - how do you help rebuild situation awareness when the driver has not been thinking about the driving task for a while? Also, the question of whether the driving test needs to change to take account of the demands of semi-autonomous driving? Lots of research going on into these aspects of autonomous vehicles - not just research into the technology.
