Electrical buzz sound when ignition turned.
Hi all, apologies in advance for the long winded write up but in need of your expertise .
My VOLVO 1.8 Petrol 2005 refuses to start. All you get is an electrical buzz sound when you turn the ignition. Tried jump starting and kick starting but nothing. I’m a novice but as I have some time on my hands I decided to attempt a DIY job. See below a few things I’ve had to replace/repair so far: * replaced dead battery with new Bosch battery. * Confirmed battery charge with a multimeter and in good health * had to replace key fob housing and battery using after market housing but unfortunately the ignition doesn’t recognise the key but the fob only works to lock/unlock. I also replaced the battery on my spare key but this key is unable to lock/unlock but works in the ignition. So right now i’m using 2 keys. * Replaced alarm control module due to cracked housing and flat battery. So far when you set the alarm the light flashes indicating that it’s on but when you try to trigger it, nothing happens. No lights flashing and no alarm sound/siren. Attempted troubleshooting based on a few recommendations on the web and fellow members.. * Removed the battery negative terminal, waited 5 minutes to reconnect. Pressed unlock, inserted key in the ignition to start but nothing. * Closed all doors, windows, bonnet etc, locked and unlocked 5 times, then start and nothing. * Tried re-setting the immobiliser using the below ...... * Cycled the key to Position II on the ignition (without starting the engine) five times. On the sixth time, tried starting the engine and nothing. * Also tried pressing the panic button on the key fob, the panic alarm worked and then unlocked the car and tried starting the engine but didn’t turn in order to finish the steps by turning the key to position II then off five times. The emergency siren worked which to me indicates that the alarm control module is working even though it’s not triggering once armed. * Tried to remove and reinsert the ECM (F30) fuse but surprisingly there wasn’t one. Not sure why or how it would affect the resetting process and whether I should replace it and re-attempt an immobiliser re-set? I’m feeling a little out of my depth here if I’m honest but thought I’d give it one last go before I raise the white flag and call a mechanic. So far I think it might be the alarm/immobiliser preventing the engine from starting. But based on what I’ve read so far, other recommended areas to test would be the alternator, ignition and starter relay. I’ve yet to research how testing is done especially on a car that won’t start. So if you have any info/advice on this and what your thoughts are overall that would be great. Thanks in advance. |

You will get more advice if you post in the correct forum section as previously advised.
I understand the receiver ring, i.e the bit on the dashboard the key plugs into can often fail on these S40 models. It cant recognise the key so wont start.
