This one is on AGAIN and his comment on reserve is amusing “resisted due to reserve not being met so lowering reserve even further”. Maybe he should lower his expectation further

Thank you Thekilt. That answers the question from yesterday - the seller has decided to chip away at the asking price a little bit more. As we concluded above, this one has reached some bidder fatigue, when the genuine punters have become bored with it going down but never selling. The highest bid last time was about £1,200.

I think this is the sixth or seventh auction.

With this particular example of auction, i don tunderstand why they dont start it a tthe reserve as its clear the people bidding understand the value, which is a lot less than what this person is expecting.
I would be interesting if this was circa £1k and was closer to me. Its just too far and even the startign price is a bit high for my liking.

I agree - and I think experience has shown the seller’s strategy has been flawed throughout. He/she started out at £5,000 in February and it has harken 4 months worth of final reductions to get to a more reasonable price. In that time the seller has used up 4 months of MoT that would have cost him quite a bit to achieve.

What is this car worth? I suppose it is no worse than the car in Bude that sold for a grand, and two or three auctions ago it did get a bid at about £1,700 - so one would have to say something between £1,000 and £1,700. Why the seller thought it might go for £5,000 in the first place is beyond me.

It depends on what you are looking for, this car had a lot of issues to get through the last MoT (I think the history is included somewhere in the thread above) and still needs a repair to the fuel gauge (at least). If you want a project that is a runner and rider but aren’t too fussed about it becoming an historic car then this one at up to £1,500 is probably okay. Once you have factored in your costs to collect that still might be high.

I would be after a project runner, as i am happy with most mechanical issues, but would prefer something without any rust issues, or at least very little. I have a very good garage next to my work that specialises in welding classic cars so is easy enough to do but the cost starts ramping up. The one in Bude i would have prefered to collect but isnt the right time at the moment as now not sure if the wife is going back to work. But now i may be an on call fire fighter and may need another car anyway.

A running and riding project car may suit you well as a firefighter; I have an ex-Army mate nearby that is a firefighter and so know the on-call roster would suit a project well. My mate generally has a 4 on/4 off rota, assuming you do the same then a 1980s Volvo might give you a good mix of usable car and interesting project all in one.

I'd tend to avoid anything rusty (a bit difficult with 240s!) as unless you can do it yourself then chasing rust around gets expensive and time consuming. Something like the Bude car at about a grand would be sensible.

Correct me if i'm wrong, i used to work with an on-call firefighter (long time ago and i know things may have changed since) but they had a certain amount of time to get to the station.

None of the UKDM 240s were (or intended to be) a ball of fire in terms of performance and you may find you struggle to achieve the time to get to the station from your first page/contact. Also the fact it's an ongoing project may compromise you at certain times.

If that isn't a consideration, then go for it!

you have to be within 5 minutes of travel time from the station...I am 5 minutes walking at a brisk pace so have multiple options (walk, run, cycle or drive if the weather is nasty). only in the early stages at the moment anyway, and with a full time job too the hours im on call will vary.

My work place is 4 miles away but still at home at the moment, with expectations movign back to the office starting in July but not in the office full time, some time will be at home still to negotiate that bit though!

The car with the broken fuel gauge has received a bid (£1250, reserve still not met) - let's see what happens now...

It might even be a genuine bid!
