Default S60 2008 euro 4 185 clunk

Hi
When moving off from stationary I'm getting a loud clunk from somewhere at the front I think.
I have replaced the top engine mount, torque mount and had a new steering rack fitted a month ago.
The front shocks are new and both spring seats and bearings were replaced about 3 months ago.
I put the car in park and rocked it back and forth to replicate the issue. Can be heard in this video

https://youtu.be/KjmklTa3A6Y

Anyone know what else to check?

Thanks

if you put it up on stands or jack it up one side at a time, does it clunk if you turn the wheel back and forth by hand?

possibly gearbox/driveshaft related though I'm not any sort of expert, just trying to suggest something helpful

There’s more engine mounts than what you’ve replaced & it sounds like play in a mount.

There’s one underneath the radiator/in that area. That may explain why you hear a clunk around the front of the car.

Following with interest. I am chasing exactly the same problem with my 2004 Euro 3 D5 V70, 244k miles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fsIrdB_dxM

I changed the front and rear engine vacuum mounts - made no difference. Also changed the top engine mount and bottom torque control arm - again, made no difference. So at this point every engine mount has been changed except for the one under the cambelt.

I also swapped the driveshaft bolts for the ones with a rubber damper collar (supposed to eliminate what is known as "axle ping") - no joy.

I really need to replicate the noise with the car on a ramp, to see exactly where it is coming from.

Anyway good luck and keep us posted.

Do you get the clunk if you move from forward to reverse gears and vice versa with the handbrake off? If so, suspect wear in the drive shaft spilnes - as you, I replaced the "in-common parts" in my now sold 2001 V70 Torslanda non-turbo petrol version - problem finally solved when I replaced the drive shafts - complete units with new CV's best price I found was via https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/ approx £158 for a brand new pair.

Sounds like a worn driveshaft with excessive play.
You could try to grab the shaft and twist forwards and backwards by hand to replicate the noise.

You'll need the full weight of the car on the ground so driving it up onto ramps or having it up on a high kerb so you can get under it.

Thanks for the reply and the link - really helpful. Yes I do get the clunk in those circumstances. And the car has noticeable driveline lash, which manifests as a jolt felt when lifting off/re-applying the accelerator. Which tells me there is some wear in the drivetrain. Hopefully replacement drive shafts will be the fix here.

That's really helpful, thanks Cherished5. I'll get the car up on some ramps and see if I can replicate the noise.

I had a consistent clunk and squeak while driving. Turns out my front passenger side topmount was completely shot. Replaced it, and the silence is beautiful. From what Ive heard, if all components have been checked and seem fine, its usually the top mount which is the culprit.
