I'm thinking it could be the pressure sensor regulator on the high pressure pump. Going to order a working pump and try switching the regulator first.

Changed the fuel pressure regulator on the high pressure pump... Still the same.

I got a new fuel filter fitted it in, saw on this forum the easiest way to bleed it is to undo the return hose and crank the engine over till fuel comes out the hose.

Problem I have now is that the car is cranking over and over and no fuel is coming out. Tried it until the battery was flat and then hooked to another car tried it another 10 or so times. No fuel came out? These cars don't have in tank pumps so it should fill with engine cranking. My friend had to go so I'll try again tomorrow, after filling the filter myself.

You have to prime the fuel system with a volvo tool , arubber hand pump to suck the fuel up from the tank and pump it through the filter , it will then start .. The High Pressure pump has very little " suction" ..

Connected one of they hand priming bulbs to the fuel return connection. My god I have been pumping it for 2 hours. I get the odd flow of diesel then nothing but air. Should it really take this long? Or is this a symptom of something else? I thought it would probably take maybe 40 min with the filter being empty...I'll continue on. My arm will be like Popeye's.

Thats the wrong way ! You need to connect it on the input pipe on the filter housing .

Problem has been resolved. After finally purging the air out it appears the fuel pressure regulator has fixed the issue.

Now have proper pressure and no fuel starvation.
Hope it helps somebody in the future and thanks to all who helped.
