Default volvo v70 overheating

can anybody help me?

my 2001 Volvo v70 is overheating, the coolant level was fine then all of a sudden the high engine temp message pops up, I pull over and inspect the coolant which is now boiling like a kettle. took it to a garage and they checked it...nothing wrong. after 1 more day of driving not even 10 miles the same thing happens, can anybody out there help me? is this going to cost me a lot?

Thermostat stuck shut or the water pump impeller broken up not pumping water around the engine.

My first reaction as well. Start from cold and monitor the temp guage and the top hose which should get hot as the gauge reaches the mid point.
