Hi there Smigger, welcome to the forum. Your car has probably gone into limp home mode and will have generated a code that will be logged.

The dealer will be able to read the code and that will point them in the right direction.

Thanks for the welcome.

Limp mode does seem to rectify itself after dipping the clutch and a few revs and then a few more revs power resumes. Once moving the issue doesn't seem to happen. Limp mode seems to occur once I've been idling in queue of traffic or at lights when trying to pull away it just dies.

Will see what they say on Monday and post back the verdict.

.
that's interesting as it may be that there is something failing that gives the same symptom as limp mode, but the car isn't in that particular mode.

What I mean is that limp home mode is a system response to an incorrect or unexpected input from any other part of the system. The cpu will then generate a response that we call limp home mode. This will in my experience mean that car will not rev over 2800 rpm, possibly by restricting fuel supply.

Once this response has been triggered, then only a system reset (stopping ignition and then restarting) will clear the limp home mode until the cpu senses another failure and the cycle will again start.

The key here is that if a sensor triggers the response, then cpu will repsond accordingly, but there may be other components on the engine that if fail, give a similar siympton but do not trigger a cpu response.

Reading back in previous posts there are examples here, egr being quoted.

Anyway good luck and let us know how Monday goes.

I have experienced some hesitation when pulling away (05 2.0D) which I put down to a sticky EGR. Recently I have started using premium diesel and it doesn't happen. Could be that the cleaner fuel is clearing the soot from the EGR?

My 05 2.0D has just hit 124,000 miles and I have no DPF problems or EGR issues.

You have to drive diesel engines accordingly to keep them running smoothly.

this means BOTH ends of the scale.

If you can keep the car driving at a constant 40-50mph for good length of time, it gives the DPF enough time to regenerate.

On the flip side, sometimes you need to take your car out on a BIG BLAST to free up all the gunk.

I drove mine for a month with an empty 'additive tank' and the engine kept going into limp home mode if i drove it hard.

Simply topping this up at a volvo dealer sorted it, and now the engine is fine again.

Hi there!

"Unexpectedly when I was trying to pull out on a round-a-bout this morning, car was gutless. Like trying to set off in 2nd without any rev's being given to the engine, despite the accelerator pedal being firmly pressed!!! Happened on my way home to. Symptoms do seem to be when the car has been idling and when at low revs and accelerating away."

Couldn't described it better... Sounds like an egr problem?

S40 2.0D E3 2004

Ps: on this engine which should indicate the real position of the egr: the EGR DUTY CYCLE pointing % or EGR POSITION SENSOR pointing volts?

Thanks!
