Default 2011 Exec Rear discs gone

Left my 2011 Exec standing for 7 days. The brakes were stuck on when I tried to drive it and needed a bit of throttle to get then off. The car then had terrible juddering from the rear for the next few days and about 50 miles when braking.

Volvo dealer has advised that the discs have corroded and will need changing at a small cost of £335. Option B was to just drive it and wear down the corrosion. Surprised at a £42K car with 24K on the clock would need new discs and it was wear and tear so not under warranty.

Thought I might call Volvo customer services for a chat.

Corroded discs is a great money making scheme for garages.
Just drive the thing its fine, maybe do a few hard braking sessions to scrub em up a bit.

Discs are cast iron so will rust quickly, particularly with the amount of salt on the roads at the moment.

If its your hand brake thats siezing then I find that applying it once a week when coasting downhill to a junction or something keeps it clean. (The handbrake uses a set of shoes inside the rear brake, not the discs and pads. If you never use the handbrake then it will sieze and corrode)

Indeed call CS's, I have had some success with issues via them.

The visible corrosion on the disc is trivial and will wipe off after a few miles.

The issue with the parking brake is a different matter as it uses a drum brake inside the disc with separate shoes. These will stick occasionally but after you free them they should work normally. If you are getting juddering the shoes may have delaminated (the lining comes away from the shoe). All Volvos are prone to this. You may hear a knocking or similar noise from the wheel and or reduced effectiveness of the parking brake. You should investigate further by removing the disc to inspect the shoes.

Replace disks through corrosion? Utter rubbish! find an empty road. Accelerate to 60 mph. Perform an emergence stop. Repeat. Problem sorted.

Have seen this type of corrosion before. When a car is left the brakes will stick a little but where it has sat in the same place for days, with this weather you can get a bigger build up of corrosion and pitting. Causing a raised surface on the disc this causing judder. wear and tear yes, warrenty mmmmmm if your lucky. try doing harsh braking to scrub it off. if its still there then new pads and discs.

Thanks for the advice. The juddering has stopped after a bit of brake action. Just surprised that they wanted to try and get me to spend £335 when clearly it would wear down so quickly.

Thanks.

Glad to help. Brakes and discs are a great money making centre for garages.
