Bonnet springs

Hi all,

Has anyone tried to adjust their bonnet springs using the 3 options on the hinges? If you look at the generic pic I have attached you can see what I mean. I am fitting up my doors, wings and bonnet at the mo and the rear of the bonnet sits a little high, probably due to wear in the various pivot points in each hinge. I was wondering whether I could counter act that using a different spring mount point. I don't think I've seen discussion of the effects of the 3 positions before. Any and all suggestions welcome. As far as I am concerned the springs should be anchored in the middle hole (as shown). No adjustability there intended. (But why the extra two holes? I have no idea.)

I found the scissors-type configuration of those hinges quite challenging, conceptually, to get my mind around. I even made up a cardboard model of one at the time, to play around with.

My conclusion was that it is a mistake to think that the way to adjust the height of the rear edge of the bonnet is to adjust the lower bracket of the hinge up or down the slope where the hinge is bolted to the chassis. The particular geometry of the hinge is such that when the bonnet is closed the spring exerts only a relatively minor downward pull on the rear of the bonnet. So much so that the height of the rear of the bonnet is almost entirely determined by the height of the rear bonnet sealing strip.

Hence:

Is there a way in which you can make the rear sealing strip to sit a little lower? Is it perhaps a new sealing strip, that needs to be bedded in a little better?

I don’t think wear of the pins is an issue.

I'm with you on the confusion around how the hinges work when down. I don't see why there would be 3 holes if they did not offer something. There is nothing in the green book about them though. I can gently push down on the bonnet when it is closed and get perfect fitment, so there is some play somewhere. when i wrote the previous reply I had not noticed the other holes.

I don’t know if there is play in the bolt holes but sliding the hinge down the bulkhead will drop the bonnet and push it forward so you would then need to slide the bonnet back towards the bulkhead on the hinge to bonnet connection
