Diesel's improve mpg for their whole life. (assuming they don't suffer a problem of some kind of course)

42 mpg to 64 mpg from new to 200,000 miles for the Citroen ZX I saw complete figures for.

Low 20's for town use is about it! My XC90 with 35K is still giving low 20's mpg.

Our MY 2010 XC90 Active (with the Polestar treatment) now has 6500 miles and does a three mile drive to school and back every day and 28.7 mpg rising to around 35 on a quick black up the motorway at 80ish for 90 miles each way.

You do not precise if your car is auto or manual. From your numbers, I bet manual.
The auto is worse especially in town. The torque converter eats power. Another reason is that auto gearbox revs the engine more than a manual driver would do.

Put in manual mode, I can improve consumption by about 3 mpg in town by changing gear more rapidly than the gearbox would do... That's ok for 10 minutes and then I cannot bear it any more and put it back in auto. When you are used to an auto box, it is very hard to go back to manual... So much more relaxing to let the car do it

Sorry yes its a manual. It's my wife's car and she will not entertain an auto. No more manuals now it seems ...

my sentiments exactly ! I do except the price paid in fuel for the luxury of auto , but I'm always trying to improve the milage, I would imagine knocking it into neutral more often when in queues would help , but am I adding to the mechanical wear in the box ? I still cant uderstand why the 165 is so much better, can a particulate filt really cause it ?

It obviously depends a lot on the kind of driving you are doing, our 2007 D5 Auto rarely averaged over 25 mpg in its 3 years and 55k miles. We live in the country and it was almost entirely windy hilly A, B and minor roads.

I have a friend who has a manual and commutes into Aberdeen in the traffic who claims to average over 30 easily - suggests the auto box is a big culprit (not that I would have a manual!)

Cheers

Yes tis correct, Geartronic only now and 200ps due to Euro V emmissions.
realistically with a manual and a properly worn in engine you should get an average from 26-32 MPG depending on the mileage the car does.

I've seen Geartronic's as low as 22 MPG and as high as 38 MPG as it goes!!
