Default B230 Engines, Advice please?

Calling all you volvo brainiacs!! Is there any difference between a B230Et Bottom end and a B230FK/FT Bottom end? And could you use the Later FK/Ft bottom end on a 740 series???

I am asuming that you want to replace the bottom end in your 740 Turbo.

The difference between the two will be the ET has 9mm rods a late FK will have 13mm rods.

the pistons are slightly different, i cant remember the compression ratio of the two, but if i recall correctly the difference is 0.3 The ET being slightly higher if my memory serves correct.

You can use an FK bottom end with your 740's 531 Cylinder head, it will still run fine.

The only things to watch out for is that you swap over the flywheel and sensors from your ET engine onto the FK block and you install the flywheel in the correct postion relative to TDC. Thats assuming your donor FK comes with a flywheel and sensors attached.

Also you might want to swap the front bottom cambelt gear as at some point they went from a round to a square tooth cambelt. compare the two gears side by side. You could just swap all the gears over from head, oil pump and crank drives to whatever belt you find cheaper to source or buy.

you'll also need to swap over the water pipe that runs from the water pump to the back of the engine to the heater core. It runs underneat the turbo manifold as an FK engine has a take of to do oil cooling using the water circuit, whereas you will be bolting on the oil cooler adaptor your ET engine has.

The FK engine will have a knock sensor installed, you can just leave it attached, as you wont have a plug on the motronic loom to install it.

Thats all i can think off at this moment, i'll add some pics later of pertinent points.

B230FK LH2.4 flywheel in correct positon with engine at TDC

The B230ET Motronic flywheel does not have the 58 drilled holes like the LH2.4 one, it just has one pin, which again must be fitted at 9 oclock with the engine on TDC or it should be visible through starter motor hole.

The motronic uses 2 flywheel sensors, one to count the ring teeth and one to get the TDC timing mark.

This picture shows the water pipe of an ET and the Oil Cooler adapator of an ET much clearer.
