Default Engine System Service Requires - No Power - 042

2006 MY V70 D5 - 55k Miles

Orange triangle came on yesterday accompanied by "ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED MESSAGE" - car massively down on power, runs smoothly and accelerates very slowly upto motorway speeds but feels as if there's no turbo boost at all.

Holding Trip Reset in whilst turning key to position 2 initially showed codes 042 and 167. No longer shows 167 but still shows 042.

Drove home and boost would come and go - sometimes the car would accelerate as normal, sometimes no power at all.

Drove the car again this evening - initally fine then down on power after about 5 miles and stayed that way.

Noticed slight smell of burning melted chocolate for the last couple of weeks (although may have something to do with the amount of chocolate my kids have dropped on the floor!).

Idle perhaps a bit uneven for last week or so but only slightly so.

Haven't had a chance to look at car in the light yet - had a quick poke around with a torch tonight and no obvious hoses split etc but couldn't see properly.

Any guidance on likely faults/resolution gratefully received !

Hi,

have a GOOD read of this thread. This may very well be your problem,
it certainly was mine.

If your swirl arm has broken then it is a common problem and a DIY fix provided you follow the advice.

Problem turned out to be a split Intercooler -> Turbo inlet hose.

Thanks for the help.

Default Xc90 2009 engine fault code 042

All I want to know, is what does this code mean when it is gleaned from the car showing ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED. There must be a list somewhere?

Get a code reader. They're less than £10.
