Default Used KN Air filter

Looking for one ?

Volvon once donated me one, but my friend who did a lot of work on my car for FREE had his eye on it and I felt really bad not to give it to him

I liked the cool noise even though it didn't do anything in terms of power

Do the Panel ones make the same noise ?

no, the panel filters sit in the standard air box and mute the noise. The only way to get the noise is from an induction kit and get pure unadulterated sucking noise from the engine bay!!

You do not need to buy a k&n though, as the air flow meter is separate from the air box, any universal cone filter will do the same job. I am buying a new one off ebay next week for £9.99 + p&p.

just make sure the inlet at the bottom of the cone filter is metal and the correct size so the intake pipe can be jubilee clipped to the filter. Also, for a possible performance gain, try and run a cold air feed to the filter as sucking in warm air from the engine bay will not give you any extra bhp and may even reduce the power of the car.

Hope this helps and I'll put pics of mine up as and when I've done it. (after replacing the heater matrix, starter, headlights, brakes etc. it may be a while until I get around to doing it!!)

Are the generic ones also good for "life" and can be cleaned ?
Can you share a link ?

Thanks

Not 100% true ....

You do get a little bit of noise from the panel filter, not massive amounts though. It lets enough sound through that I can hear my recirc clearly, so that keeps me happy.

If you do go for a full cone filter, leave the bottom "half" of the airbox in place as thats a good ready-made source of cold air, and you can make something up to seal off around the rest of the filter to stop it sucking in (quite as much) heated air.

The generic ones can be cleaned but probably not for life. They should last a few years as they are made in a similar way to k&n but the branded ones come with much more research and development and a full fitting kit.

If you do decide on the branded one, i would pick the pipercross over the k&n as the pipercross is a foam filter rather than paper and tends to perform better! (less clogging)

I think the pipercross part number is pk011 if memory serves but ive not been in the car modification game for a few years now

Ive always bought proper K&N's. They arent the cheapest but after feeling the difference on my T4 with a proper K&N compared to the awful Ripspeed crap that came on it they are worlds apart.

I also made my own heat shield for it to stop the hot air and Im thinking about a cold sir feed if I can somehow find the parts I need for £0

I have a used k&n only used it for a year tops could do with a bit of a clean.. Does your airbox have a foam lining? if it does then taking that out will make a massive difference to the induction noise..
