Default Cambelt replacement

Its an S60 D5 2005 163bhp.

For anyone about to replace the cambelt, just had mine done, at 68,000 miles/nearly 8 years.

Cost for genuine parts £199, including cambelt, auxilliary belt, all rollers and tensioners, all new bolts and crankshaft nut (x1) and screws (x4). plus £120 for fitting (2 hours) at a South Wales Volvo Indie.

Did fancy doing it myself, but did not fancy undoing the crankshaft pulley nut, or doing it back up to the correct torque.

And what`s more, when the mechanic started it up, it dodn`t go BANG. Which is always a bonus. For me, the £120 was worth it.

Not too bad although he overcharged over 30 mins of labour . Thats what independants tend to do , so lower labour charge but charge out more time than a dealer .... end result similar price .

(Volvo time for timing belt 54 mins + 18 mins for aux belt idler wheels )

Done mine today, 2nd time since I've owned the car, ( V70 my2003,113000 miles).

Not too hard a job to do yourself, but I employed a friend to help, always makes life easier.

Changed belt, tensioner and roller.

Got the genuine parts from ebay (£79.75)

Smile crank pulley removal

Hi Blunders,

How did it go with removing the crank nut & how did you re-torque to 300Nm?

300Nm = 221 lb.ft, which is 15.8 stone.ft, or an 8 stone person standing on the end of a two foot breaker bar, thereabouts.

Brendan W;

Had the auxilliary tensioner assembly replaced, part no 31551252 Belt Tensioner, Volvo list price £52.50 plus VAT, although I got all the parts from FRF with the discount.

Clan;

I suspect I would have paid more than £120 labour at the Volvo dealer in Cardiff, and they only offer me 5 to 10% parts discount.

I replaced the complete tensioner as well although thought it was overkill but the pulley being preassembled rang an alarm bell which decided me to go for it. If you haven't already replaced it keep an ear open for cricket noises from the alternator freewheel - mine started to sulk soon after the the others were replaced albeit at 96k.
