Default Engine Talk at my wheel refurbers!

Where i had my wheels refurb just had a fantastic chit chat ( i went to drop some spare tickets off for OP a week on saturday) to one of the guys who used to race karts ...absolutely amazing but one thing we got chatting on...a 21 litre 4 Cylinder engine (not a typo)...I cannot remember the cars name for the life of me, but his dad helped get it started with the owner...it had another engine to start the engine!

peak power was around 1600 rpm, even at idle it is capable of about a 100!

absolutely mental but somehow beautiful i would love to the know the name but we were all just talking about the engine....

anybody else find this absolutely fantastic we were in our element things like the brutus and other proper old vintage cars came up for discussion but oh man that stuck with me...

a 21 litre 4 cylinder engine...crazy absolutely crazy but somehow beautiful!

Brutus can't even go 100 (km/h) on idle, as the gearing is set to still go faster

1912 Benz S2 200 - 21.5lt.

1912 Fiat "Beast of Turin" - 28.0lt.

Largest American 4cyl. Was 1907 Thomas Flyer

Smile Car Powered by Helicopter Engine!

Well Guys,
All this talk of large and peculiar engines, reminds me of my days working at Lotus Cars. This was during the time that both Graham Hill and Colin Chapman were very much alive and kicking. I am thinking of the car they built for the Indianapolis 500 -"The Wedge" with a Pratt and Whitney helicopter engine in it! The damn thing had no clutch, with a tickover speed equivalent to 70 miles an hour! When it passed the factory on the test track, there was no fantastic sound of a Formula One car, just the high whistle you get from jet planes! Because of the lack of clutch/gears, the brakes were getting red hot on cornering! And I had a friend in the paint rectification dept. who showed me where the dayglo pink paint had burnt off the fibreglass body as a result! So they had to laminate more ducts to the front end to get more air to the brakes. Fascinating stuff!

Rob.
