Question High pitched whistle under acceleration

Hi all,

Bit of a weird one here and I'm a bit stuck

Yesterday my car developed a high pitched whistle when on the throttle. It sounds just like a super charger (no I've not fitted one ) and happens when revving at a standstill too. The noise is definitely coming from the engine bay.

The usual turbo spooling whistle is still there but drowned out by this one.

So far I've -

- Checked for vacuum leaks.
- Taken heat shield off and checked turbo
- Checked exhaust manifold
- Checked air filter
- Checked all hoses around the TCV

The car is still boosting to 1.25 bar on the boost gauge which is dead on for my car, so I don't think there is a leak anywhere. Any ideas on what this noise could be?

Thanks for any help

I left work and took it to Volvo as I had a thought in the back of my mind that I wanted out.

Unfortunately that thought was correct, turbo shaft has a lot of play, that's what's making the noise.

New turbo at £680 + cambelt + other work it's booked in for - Is it even worth it anymore?

I would just keep the revs below 3K and change to a thicker 10/60 race oil (Mobil 1 10/60 EL etc), then sling in 300ml of Ceratec and hope for the best. If the turbo oil seal has not split, the turbo might well last a long time if the revs are kept low.
