Thumbs down Swirl arm problems.

Hi.
Can anyone help me please?
I've had my 08 s60 D5 for a few months now and I love it! But my better half came back from a quick trip to the shops and said "it's broken"
I've narrowed it down to the swirl arm being detached and ordered a replacement but there seems to be no resistance on the arm on the engine. Is this normal? Also the motor seems to be stuck( it just clicks when the engine is switched off) the arm seems to be pushed towards the engine at all times. Is there any way to test the motor and can I replace it or is it a garage job? Going on holiday in 7 days so need to get it done ASAP.
I'd be grateful if anyone can help.

Thanks for that.
I think it must be a dead actuator as it doesn't move but I can hear it ticking when I switch the engine off.
Can I replace it without having to reprogram the ecu?
Also, does anyone know where I can get a new motor ASAP?

A new unit will be volvo only and an adaption or calibration of the swirl arm may be needed. I would also check the ball joint on the swirl valves itself isn't worn as this is normally the case for them to drop off. You can get a kit to repair which is basically a split pin but can be fiddly to fit.

Before you shell out put the arm back on start and stop the engine 5 times this recalibrate the stop function .if that is okay then there's a possibility that it's fine and the arm had just detached

Question

Thanks for the replies guys.
I've tried start/stop and no change. The motor seems to be trying to move but is just buzzing. There's no resistance on the valve arm so it's not stuck, does anyone know how much resistance there should be on the valves? Might the valve assembly be broken? I'm going to buy a second hand actuator and hope that works. Can I open up and check the swirl valves without too much hassle. I just need to get it running for our holiday and give it a full "I love my volvo" service when we get back!

The arm on the engine should move freely. The actuator will hold the swirl valves closed (arm towards the engine) when the engine is at idle and low power.
Even a servicable actuator will not move easily, if at all, by hand. But as others have said it should run a test cycle every five shutdowns.
If you think the actuator is duff, remove the actuating link and tie the arm on the engine forward (away from the engine). This will open the swirl valves and prevent the engine from putting on the eng light and going into limp mode. This will give time to decide on a course of action.
Mine has been tied off for three years!
