Default which type of remote is this?

I've just bought a 940 Wentworth, but the remotes don't work. I haven't seen this type of Volvo remote before so not sure how prone they are to breaking. It takes 4 small flat batteries, which were corroding. Not sure which way they go back in. Any help appreciated.
Thanks 1438853849707.jpg

Hi,

Can't say I've seen anything like that. What does the other side look like?
Is there any indication that the system is Volvo in origin?
Looks like some 3rd party alarm/system.

Des. . .

The fobs seem quite reliable if not damaged, the receivers can drift a bit, indicated by decreasing or temperature variable range. The receiver is on the windscreen led module so try it right up against that. You can improve it by tweaking the receiver, but its not a 100% fix.

Batteries nearest the button go minus up, batteries furthest away from button go plus up.

Default Trouble-shooting Tips

For what it's worth here's my brief trouble-shooting guide to these VolvoGuard 1 alarms.

1) Replace the batteries. 4 x SR1120/GP391 in the remote and make sure they are all the correct way round.

2) The red light should come on when the button is depressed. If it does not open the remote up again and look for a broken surface-mount component on the circuit board. Your remote will probably have a blue band around it, not red like in Andy's link. Your circuit board will look slightly different. Fix this broken component with a carefully-applied blob of solder to reattach the broken leg to the board. Reassemble and check for the red light.

3) If the remote doesn't work from a distance try it right up close to the triangular receiver on the A-pillar.

4) If the remote still doesn't work try reprogramming it per these instructions.

https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/se...heftSystem.pdf

Yes, they are for an 850 but it's the same system.

5) If you can get the remote working near the receiver, but not from a distance, then try re-tuning it per this thread

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=200312&page=1

6) If you can get it working from a distance by re-tuning but it only stays working from a distance for a day or so then replace the blue trimmer in the receiver per my post in the above (linked) thread.

I have had all these problems with the system on my 1994 940 Wentworth owned since 1999. I lived without the remote locking for nearly ten years but am happy to report that since my fix in June last year it has worked faultlessly from a good distance.

Good luck!

I can confirm that my re-tuning fix is still working on my car however long ago it was that I did that fix!

I have found that when they do not work , a small surface mount capacitor has fallen off the circuit board , Fairly easy to solder back on , you can hear it rattling around inside when you shake the fob .
These fobs have been unobtainable for a few years now ..

They finally arrived ....."5 switches 6mmx6mmx3.1mm Panel PCB Momentary Tactile Tact Push Button Switch 4 Pin DIP".........£3.64 ebay

The new micro switches are identical to the original switch

Had to buy another soldering iron as my old one was dead. Very tight soldering the switch, but managed it and the neon light worked after putting the batteries back in the correct order .........thanks again to Tony

I now have the remote locking back, the immobiliser/alarm and the red flashing light on the drivers side pillar

Well chuffed !!
