S40 - Waiting till 150k to get the belt changed?
Hi all,
My 2007 S40 2.0D Sport is now up to 131k miles. Belt and tensioners should be changed at 150k according to the service schedule. Question is everyone waiting till their 150k service or getting the job done beforehand? Thanks Ben |

I don't have the 2.0D but I won't be waiting until 144k to get our 1.6D timing belt done. I'll be changing it at 100,000 miles as a precaution as I did with the T5.
For all it costs it's not worth risking the engine for IMHO even if Volvo reckon it will last that long.

Thought it was 144k or 10 years for the 2.0d?
Anyway we got our V50 2.0d done at 10 years 7 months and the s60 was done at 12 years (think it was another 10 year one). I personally wouldn't be overly concerned unless the tensioners/pulleys/water pump are making noises but thats just me. |

Quite right, I've amended my post. What's 6k between fellow Volvo owners? ;-)

My S60 is on 130k, timing belt and water pump (although water pump is good for 300k people have said) were done at 98k and I'm getting the aux belt and all pulleys replaced in a couple of weeks. They may be the original ones...

I have to say that all of the engines in these range of cars aren't known to snap belts and you'd think the manufacturers interval has a safety margin built in.
I changed the one on my T5 at 8 years/65K miles because one of the tensioners was noisy.

The belt tends not to snap on all engines in the s40/v50/c30 range, the pulley's tend to go first and make the belt slip before it breaks.

Hmm. I've got a bit of belt fan noise atm and my car is going for a service at the weekend, I've told them about the noise but do you think the pulleys is something I should also ask them to check in that case? Thanks.

That said, if your mechanic needs telling to check a pulley, find another mechanic.

What a decent mechanic would do is get a stethoscope and use it to probe the casings of the auxilary pulley/tensioner bearings to check for excess noise. Sometimes noise in that area can simply be the aux belt itself.
