V40 1.9d p2 - intermittent cutting out
Hi all, a while ago I posted about an intermittent issue I had where the car would occasionally cut out at low revs once up to temperature. I tried a few things: cleaned MAF, EGR, changed fuel filter etc. but it still happens now and again if I'm crawling in first gear.
Took it to a 'Volvo Specialist' in Leeds today as I want to sort the problem before selling but their diagnostic software would only identify a fault code related to fuel pressure. Nothing more specific. Without getting into a debate on the merits of said garage and software (they didn't charge me so fair play) what would be the best guess on the culprit given the symptoms? *Intermittent cut out when crawling in low gear - revs just tail off and applying more throttle has no effect *instantly restarts *Only happens when engine is fully warm *No fluttery temp gauges *fault code relating to fuel pressure On the bright side, at least I have no other fault codes! Cheers, Nick |

When was the fuel filter last changed? If badly clogged up, it could throw codes relating to pressure
If there was a code relating to fuel pressure, it could be either the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail, or the fuel pressure regulator on the high pressure fuel pump. ANd finally, it could be a dodgy injector. However, this would be more the case, if there was not code relating to the fuel pressure

Did you change the 2 fuel filter seals when the filter element was replaced ??
If one of those seals goes bad the engine will start well, BUT tends to stall when you lift off the go pedal. The 2 seals included with the fuel filter pack should be changed every time the element is changed. It might also be a good idea to run some Liqui Moly Diesel Purge when changing the fuel filter (This can be done by just filling up the filter housing) to get rid of any gum deposits that can result from long term use of cheap brands of diesel fuel.

I've done the fuel filter twice, just to make sure that isn't the problem. Genuine Volvo parts and both seals. I'm positive it's not the fuel filter.
Gatos, do you happen to have any spares for the regulator and rail sensor? |

You will be on a very expensive hiding to no where by playing at "parts darts". If the is a code coming up referring to low fuel pressure then ask the tech to look at the freeze frame data that allow him to look at all the critical PID data at the time that fault is being set.
If his kit will not support live data, freeze frame data and data logging capability then he has crap kit so find a better equipped technician. |

If I can secure a known good 2nd hand fuel pressure regulator and fuel rail pressure sensor for circa £50 and have success with those, that is a lot cheaper and more convenient for me than having to take my car miles, drop it off, leave work early to pick it up and pay significantly more to pinpoint what might well be an issue with those parts. If the parts don't cure the issue, then I sell them on for the same fair price and I'm no worse off. |

Anyway, I would strongly recommend you get your codes read anyway, as they can give a very strong indication of what the exact problem is. See here: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...+locations+map for a map of members near you with a DICE and see if anyone is willing to read your codes for free or for a couple of beer tokens. Just be aware that some of the cheaper quality DICE out there might not read the codes on the 1.9D

Had the same problem on my 1.9d, fuel pressure regulator was the problem.
