Default Transmission Fluid / Gearbox Oil Change - How often?

Just wondering how often it is advisable to change the transmission fluid on an S40 2 litre diesel 55 plate?

Was thinking of giving it a change soon. It's done about 71,500 miles and I plan an oil and fuel filter change at 76,000, so could do it about then if it is advisable.

Also, any advice on fluid type or are you best to go in to the dealer for it? How much fluid does it take? Any snags likely with this model?

Thanks.

What gearbox do you have? Is it the MTX-75 5 speed manual?

If so, I changed the gearbox in it last Summer and can tell you about the process.

Hi statusred I found your posts/thread last night and had a read through it. Mine's the 6-speed 2 litre sport model.

I thought all 4 cylinder 2.0D's had the Ford 6-speed MMT6 manual gearbox or Ford/Getrag PowerShift automatic gearbox?

If it's the manual, it's probably a good idea to change the fluid at 75k, it's not that difficult or expensive and you usually get a slight improvement in feel. But there will be some boxes out there with 150k+ on the original fluid. It does have quite a specific fluid specified for it (which I can't remember), but it's easy to get.

I've no experience of the auto.

I see. One thing I could not understand is the eBay link to the £90 odd syringe for putting the new fluid in? Is it not better to get some tube and a funnel for a few pounds?

I've had my car with its Getrag 6-speed manual box for 8 years and taken it from 24K to 94K miles. In this time I have changed the gearbox oil twice for maintenance.

I think it's a good thing to do if you intend keeping the car for a long time but I have to say changing the oil in each case made no discernible difference in terms of gearchange quality or noise etc.

I would say probably 90% of cars in the UK 'die' with their original factory gearbox oil in place. Even if the drive shafts were removed very often the old oil will go back in afterwards.
