Assuming 2006 is the same as 2005 which I believe it is.

There is no relay in the cooling fan circuit.

signal is sent from ECM directly to the fan controller which in turn controls the fan.

6/29 being the fan
4/71 being fan controller
ECM being engine control module. ( both petrol and diesel shown.)

Hi Bob
Many thanks for your reply but Im still a little puzzled.
I have attatched a picture of the underside of the fuse box lid in the engine bay and wonder if I should be paying any attention to the FM2 fuse/relay which it says controls the engine cooling fan?
If so how do I locate it? It says its on the underside so does that mean physically underneath the other fuses and relays? Not sure how to get to it easily.
If its of no relevance to my problem please let me know then I can cross that one out.
Many thanks
Don

Don
FM2 is a 60A fuse in the diagram I posted it is numbered 11A/8

if the fan is running then the fuse must be good so you can ignore it.

for reference

You would be better getting the codes read to see if there are any faults like a failed temp sensor just doing things at random is an expensive way to fix a fault. look for a local member that may be able to help.

Mauripa,
If I disconnect the coolant temperature sender at the thermostat on my 2003 V70, the fan will come on, reconnecting the plug causes the fan to stop turning.
So----- your problem might be a defective thermostat

Hi, I have a 2002 2.4 liter model V70 XC. Going on a 90 kilometer trip I noticed steam coming out from the bonnet at about 88 kilos. I investigated and found that the coolant reservoir was letting out steam from underneath the radiator cap. On removing the cap I found that I had to put in about 2 liters of water.

With the engine running I found that the radiator fan was not working.

I have a similar problem- when I disconnect the ECT sensor (coolent temp sender?) the fan will come on and reconnecting the ECT causes the fan to stop.

I disconnected the ECT sensor, started the car and the fan came immediately and stayed on for the short trim I had to make to get the car home. After I switched the engine off the fan stayed on for a few minutest, then went of. I started the car a few times after that and every time the Fan came on immediately, and only went of a few minutes after I switched the engine off.

I replaced the ECT sensor, but the problem stays the same.

Questions:
1. Since the fan does work when the ECT is disconnected, am I correct that the Fan Control Module on the fan is ok?

2. When I start the car after the engine had cooled off I can, after the engine has run for say a minute to two minutes, feel the top radiator hose getting warm and water running to the Radiator. Can it be that the Thermostat is faulty?

3. I checked the fuses in the fuse box in the engine compartment. No 8 fuse i the only fuse I found that seems to relate to the radiator fan, but it is not blown. Does the 2002 model 2.4 liter V70 XC have a fan relay (fuse) in the fuse box in the engine compartment and, if so, where is it located?

I would appreciate your help by advising me on the above.
