Hi everyone,
I have a Volvo s60 d5 2004/2005 for couple of years now, realized mostly water in coolant. had to top up every week, but just thought as its just water it evaporates away. Any way drained and filled with mannol af12+, checked and said suitable for car (unless I checked wrong). few days later slowly noticed coolant underneath as its coolant and not just water, stays on the floor. got it checked and water pump leaking through the weep hole chamber cap. water pump has been changed by previous owner few years before I got the car.(dont know brand) Can the coolant cause the water pump to leak, or was there probably a leak before new coolant added as it was mainly water before and it dried up before noticing. most likely need new water pump and trying to figure out which brand to get as well. sorry guys if bit long but wanted to get the details out. ![]() Last edited by Erahman; Jul 2nd, 2021 at 17:55. |

Now would sound like a good opportunity to renew the timing belt, aux belt and water pump (all of which have to be removed to remove the pump). Volvo pumps are considered to be the best in the business with a substantial service life. I don’t know how good you are with tools etc but I changed the aux belt, cam belt, idler and tensioner and pump myself and it was simple and straightforward |

Someone has already thrown away a perfectly good volvo water pump and replaced it with trash for some reason , this could have cost you £8000 + for a new engine ..luckily it was the seal which failed . I despair hearing tales like this ...

just get the volvo pump which will last indefinitely and some volvo coolant which is the best you will find , Its good value too as you never have to change it ... Good luck ..

As above, use Volvo coolant. Works out about the same price as quality aftermarket stuff (Bluecol etc.) and removes any worry.
I have to say I don't buy the "it lasts for ever" line. What have Volvo got that nobody else has? Sounds a bit like your "Auto Transmission is sealed for life".

If you read through the procedure in full and watch the si rob procedure on you tube then I would give it a go. If not then I wouldn’t try it, it shouldn’t cost a fortune. You could certainly change the aux belt yourself. |
