No I Haven’t
Following on from my report on how I fixed my power steering.
I hadn’t used the car since, as I’ve been running round in my 850 all week. I decided to go somewhere in it last night & from start up the steering is back to how it was. So that lasted all of 4 miles 🤔 I’m suspicious that something must be circulating in the fluid & causing a valve to stick somewhere. First step I think is to strip the old pump & have a look inside & see what’s going on. When I bought the car (I think I mentioned this) the supply hose from the reservoir to the pump had been replaced with a long length of heater hose & the fluid replaced with atf, also the little hose retaining bracket/pump pulley guard was broken off. I think when they’ve changed the timing belt previously, they’ve snapped it & the hose has rubbed through on the pulley (educated guess). I changed the hose & flushed the system back then but just put up with the weird feel. Although the pump was never noisy, it could have run dry & done some damage potentially filling the system with swarf. Another theory is the incorrect type of hose had maybe started to break up internally & that is what’s in there. This afternoon’s investigations will hopefully reveal the truth. |

I have read about those brackets being broken when the alternator freewheel pulley seizes and the auxiliary drive belt gets thrown off and causes the damage.
