Default V70 full lock tyres rub arches

Ive just bought a 2002 petrol V70 2.4 20V and front tyres rub in wheel arches when on full lock with 225 45R17 tyres.
Previous owner said it's always done that. Tyres are new so don't want to change them for smaller ones.
Did someone say the lock can be restricted a touch by adjusting the stops so it won't rub

Both of my P2 Volvos have done this as standard. There is a bump stop kit you can buy from Volvo (not sure of part number) to reduce the steering angle. I had this on my last car (2008 S60), the tyre's still rubbed but the turning circle was atrocious.

I've just taken to avoiding using full lock on the current wagon :<

yes in theory you can just take the stops off and put a few washers between that and the wishbone, the two fixings bolts are more than long enough to do so

obviously though in doing so you're limiting your turning circle so it's a fine line you don't want to go too far with it

Volvo's designers just accepted it and just put metal plates in the inner arch so the wheels dont rub through the arch liner

the smaller wheels don't do it, mine are 195/65 R15 and they're fine, but the bigger wheels do look better.. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other

Thank you both for those.
I have a scrapped identical 2002 V70 that i have access to. It's on 205/55 R16 tyres.
Would it be ok and safe to just replace the front tyres only with the scrap wheels and tyres or would they still scuff on full lock?

my guess would be only what's obvious really, better turning circle, less rub (maybe still some..?) presuming you have standard discs and calipers and they fit of course

might find the ride quality is improved as well..

personally I would change all 4 though just to eliminate any weird handling characteristics

others may be along to advise further

I have often wondered how much the speedometer is affected by changing to different wheel sizes. I guess the tyre profile compensates ?

In the old days the speedometer gearing required changing. If necessary maybe it's a software thing now ?

Not really paranoid these days with the plethora of speed cameras !

it depends which lock stops you have ftted and how worn they are. black stops are the thickest limiting the movement= larger turning circle less chance of rubbing the inner arches . blue and white ones are thiner allowing more lock =smaller turning circle . stops should be matched to the width of the tyres fitted on the car. all 3 types available on ebay =search volvo steering stops

Don't forget the mystical and elusive green stops - I think they are what should be on 18" wheels.

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/p.../31200948.html

Volvo dealer wanted £23 each for them so I went with a pair black ones from autodoc for £5 + some washers.

New vs old:

Turning circle is appalling. My other half gets embarrassed in car parks as she thinks people will think she's useless at parking.
