Default 960 CD (96 model) Auto Gearbox died and went

Hello everybody, this is my first posting.

Maybe you could give me some advice.

My '96 965CD Auto gearbox has died. It was making a sound like a loud whinning noise then suddenly lost all drive.

Anyone any ideas on whats wrong?

or

Anyone know where to get a rebuild or good exchange in the North East of England. Gearbox is the one with economy, sport or winter mode.

Help!!

Your gearbox is type AW3040 or AW3043 made by Aisin-Warner. This is the japanese firm who bought out Borg-Warner many years ago. It sounds as if your fluid has dissapeared somehow. Does the level still show on the dipstick (with engine idling of course). If not then there is a leak somewhere between the gearbox and the radiator which has an oil cooler for the gearbox built into it. Have you got any oil contamination showing in the water reservoir. If so you may be lucky and get away with a new radiator and a flush and refill of ATF. Apart from this you may be unlucky and have to replace your gearbox. I suggest Yellow pages for a gearbox specialist in your area if you are not able to do it yourself (lack of facilities, not skill).

All the best, Peter.

Thanks for the reply Peter.

You hit the nail right on the head.

Have been getting oil in the water bottle for a few months. Have had the local specialist check twice. First time they checked the water bottle and radiator but reckoned it must have had a problem in the past and it was only residue remaining in the engine.

On the second occassion it went there after I started loosing drive when coming to a stop at road junctions. Had them drop off the box sump, clean the filter and refil/replace. They said the oil was clean. Car went great for last 3 weeks until now.

Great isn't it when you seem to know what's wrong and every body says you're dreaming.

My problem occurred tonight so will check in the morning.

Many thanks

hello nyorkshireman, if it is of use I have recently fitted a new 2922cc engine and gearbox to my 960 due to a cracked engine block, and it was simpler for me to fit the engine and gearbox combined (at a cost of £2250) thereby leaving me with a perfectly good - no faults - auto box with 78000 miles on it. I know how much the trade charges for such a thing but I am willing to part with it for less than half what they would charge, lets say £400, if you are interested send me an e-mail, - gpbrwn686@lineone.net regards, graham.

Hi Graham,

thanks very much for the offer but it's too late. Picked the car back up this morning with fully re-con box, new torque converter and new radiator.

Cost me £1300 all in.

Story of my life! If only you'd been 2 weeks earlier.

regs

Graeme
