Gear problems

Just bought a 1997 460 1.8i for next to nothing but it has a gear problem!!!!
1st is fine, 2nd whines when pushed, 3rd is non existant, 4th 5th and reverse are all fine. When I owned a 360 it had similar problems and it was caused by spacers in the selector, is this the same issue and if so how do you fix it in a FWD volvo.

There are bushes that you could try replacing but it sounds worse than that...

It was worse, fitted a new gearbox and it runs great. 700euro for a 97 460 1.8I....a good bargain I think.
