940GL : JUST BOUGHT ONE . WHAT SHALL I LOOK OUT FOR ?
Hello guys.
I have bought this 940 GL estate H reg , w/o turbo and air conditioning. A basic model, clearly very much on the borderline with the the old 740s. Just what I wanted because the more basic the less they are susceptible to breaking down, it is my philosophy. The registration document states it has engine number 0000000002443 and gives a chassis number too. In terms of useful information to buy parts that may need changing (and certainly will as it has 131k on the clock and and came w/o history)what else shall I gather? Carburetor number? Chassis number ? I foresee having to change the gearbox (1st & 2nd gear difficult to select after driving the car for a while). Any number required there? The guy who sold it mentioned there is a new kind of injection fitted on these 940s, unlike that of the 740s, Can anyone tell me what this is meant to be? At the moment the car seems keen to stall in first gear when releasing the clutch , but only after having driven it for a while in traffic. It restarts immediately. Thanks for helping out on this. The gearbox is known to be weak. Not sure where you live but if in the UK or Sweden, I would recommend replacing it with a M90 box launched in 1995. It is far superior. A second hand M47, which is what you have now, will soon develop the same annoying fault.
Your car has the LH 2.4 system offered in late 740 Turbos. It is fully electronic and has it's own diagnostic system. To be frank, the turbo and air con does not make the car very much more complicated, they are both pretty basic and mechanical. The complication lies in your computerised injection and ignition. Still, the B230FB is a very nice engine. You probably have a 1991 model which is a bit of a shame as you then have no ABS and no SIPS but provided you are a careful driver, I guess you do not need them. You have no carburettor but the chassis number should be on the plate by the driver side headlight. ------------------------------ 1995 Volvo 945 LPT Auto 1995 Volvo 850 GLT 2.5 Auto 1991 Volvo 945 GL Auto 1988 Volvo 745 GL |

This gearbox issue seems to me to be a bit of a controversy. I have read in other postings here in the forum of a user reporting a hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd with a M90 fitted on a 945 volvo and of someone - replying to a posting of my very same problem experienced by a 945 J reg owner - calling the gearchange pattern of a M47 "more logical" (what does that mean? ) than that of a M90 and advising to replace the old M47 mk II with the same type. ??!! Anyway, as I foresee not keeping the vehicle longer than 3 year I am more interested in the cost of the work. What is the cost of a replacement gearbox and of the labour required to do so ? In the UK, the two boxes seem to cost the same and the work should be the same too. You would need a few more parts but it should work out too bad.
