Default Diagnostic Socket?

A question for you ref my newly acquired 1996Volvo 940 GLE Turbo HPT Estate.

Whilst replacing some bulbs recently, I opened the central storage console between the seats, and noticed a small long removeable plastic cover, under which there is what definitely looks like a diagnostic socket.

As far as my own knowledge takes me, this looks like the older OBD1 socket (sometimes known as EEC-IV). My test set fits the socket anyway, which is two rows of 8 sockets arranged in a wedge shape above each other.

As I have a test set which fits this socket, can someone confirm exactly whether this socket IS the main diagnostic socket, and if there is any software/code information specific to Volvo for it.

I have this test set from a few years ago when I owned a 2.9 Ford Scorpio Ultima (the Scorpio with the new shape) and a group of the Scorpio Club/forum members clubbed together to have these made at a cost of about £40.00 each. I have the Ford Codes, but not sure if they are the same.

If anyone has used, or knows how to use this socket, would you be kind enough to share any info you've got.

I have a friend who's got an older Ferrari. When I showed him this tester this morning, he said *!*!*!*. I had to hire one of those last week from Ferrari at a cost of £60.00 for the day to sort out a fuel injection issue. He never knew I had it, and it's exactly the same input socket.

Thanks.

Used the port in a 96 S70 in exactly the same place. OBDI as you say + CAN network functionality (was able to read fault codes off the air con for example as well as engine, etc)

That's good news.

Have you any idea if there is any Volvo specific program to run with it?

Thanks for your reply.

In 96 the OBDI / CAN standard wasn't exactly being applied in the same way by pretty much any automotive company. Lots of bespoke stuff going on. The S70 didn't even like the specific S70 program we tried to use and had to be persuaded to play fair by pretending to be a C70 (accoridng to the kit). Volvo coding tends to be pretty much bespoke outside of the drivechain even now. The usual kit that mechanics have won't read anything but the drive chain + service light re-set except when they start spending £4k+ on it - pretty much main dealer stuff although I found guy near me with some fancy Bosch kit that could read anything (£50). Cheaper than a main dealer.......

Hi,

Although it is an OBDII socket it doesn't have any compatability with any OBDII readers on the market. Neets a volvo reader.

However. Build your own diagnostic box for it..
Linky...

Thanks for all the info.

I already have the box. We had them made for a Scorpio that I owned. It's fitted with all the test switches etc. I'll try and get a picture of it up later on.

It seems that there isn't any Volvo specific software, but I'll have a play around, and let you know what I come up with.

Thanks

There is a specific aftermarket tool for this. Cost about £100 from memory, can't remember the name (maybe Volvo FCR).

I did want one but to be honest can't say I've never needed it, and certainly the LED flasher mod gets you back to the 95 diag output which I have never had to use either.

I'm about to build a test box for my '97 945.

Using the led/push button circuit previously mentioned, the pin connections are:

1: ignition
3: fuel
5: ground
7: SRS (possibly)
12: ABS
13: cruise control
16: +12v

It would be nice to have a wiring diagram for the '96/'97 940 as the wiring seems quite different to the '95 diagrams that I have.

Have just finished making my fault code reader and it works
I made a small change to the earlier design, using a rotary switch to allow me to switch between ignition, fuel, ABS and cruise control.

I bought the OBD plug from ECUFix.com for £5.75 delivered and the rest of the parts from Maplin.
There was no science involved in the choice of components, just a 12v panel mount led and other parts that looked right. Total cost including plug was £16.23.

Now I just have to wait for a fault so that I can use it

Now that you've got it, your car will NEVER develop a fault that the OBD will be able to help you with. (See Sod's Law and Murphy's corollary to same.)
