Starting the car turns the door lights off, rotate the ignition key and you'll see the lights disappear

Default 1995 850 estate door light

Hi folks,
Can anyone tell me what turns off the red lights on the front doors. On the rears, moving the door catch to the closed position turns them off, On the front this does not work, on the drivers side front, I can just see the red door light going out as the door finally shuts, if I do this slowly and watch carefully. However, I am not convinced the passengers side red light is going out. On saying this I have neved had problems with the battery even and the car gets left for a week sometimes

Sorry for delay in replying, I was more worried about this light staying on when the car was not in use, and flattening the battery. Yes, starting the car turns out all the internal lights, but I was testing these lights with everything turned off. Thanks for any advice.
