I looked into them a year ago. They are based on the premise that if you pulse short sharp current spikes (about 10A) at a few hundred kHz, then it dislodges the sulphate coating that builds up. I knocked up a protype (using the inductive kick-back of a coil) but ran out of time so bought a C-Tec unit which seemed to restore the battery on an old car. My feeling is that when the battery is old you can never bring it back to the performance of a new one but if you don't need much cranking power it is probably worth thinking about.

Incidentally, the one thing that all the battery experts say is do not let the battery become discharged for any length of time or it sulphates.

I use an Optimate to keep my Landrover battery in good shape - its been stood for a few years now but the battery is still A1. I also used it on my bikes for many years before that. Its not cheap but IMHO its worth it.

You can revitalise car and NiCad cells by using a Mig welder. By tapping the electrodes on the battery contacts in reverse pole, then forward pole, this will bring the battery back to life after a charge. Here's a youtube video of the above.

A friend of mine tried it with his drill Ni-cad and it is now back to normal, giving a full charge.
