Tyre pressures
Could somebody please confirm the correct tyre pressures for a volvo s40 sport 2005.
The label on the filler cover says 32 rear and 38 front normal loading. Looking up on the internet i get 31 both or 32 both. The 38 for the front has always seemed high but i have used this pressure as there is a label on the car stating 38. Can someone put me right. Thanks. |

Hi
The cars manual should say what pressure the tyres should be for your car and tyre size (fully laden and part laden). On mine it is 32 psi all round for 205/55/r17. 38 does seem alot but I guess depends on the car and size of tyre you have on. |

I am on 32psi all round as well. Are the tyres 18"?
38 sounds v. high. Is the tread wear even or is it greater down the centre of the tyre? If it is then that pressure is too high and you need to reduce it. I ran at 36psi for a while and wore down the centre of my tyres. The garage man looked at me as though I was stupid when he measured the tread. I tried to explain it was an eco setting but stopped in embarrassment as he just kept looking at me with a "you are still stupid look".

I can confirm tyres as being 215,45,r18 w
My previous set did wear down the middle so now i think i am being stupid. The manual says to look at the label on the inside of the flap to the fuel filler. For normal usage the front is specified as 38psi. Am i going mad, am i stupid and if so what pressue should the front tyres be? |

This is the S40 tyre pressure table published in the latest manual.

Thanks for the chart.
The coversion factor from kpa to psi is 0.1450, this gives the front tyres a pressure of 260x0.1450 = 37.7, so 38psi is correct. The question is why are the front tyres wearing in the middle? |

Wear in the middle tends to suggest over inflation. It may be worth talking to a local tyre fitter and run through the situation with them. A normal garage may not have the knowledge but a tyre place should have.

Hi,
I am a newbie to this forum. I purchased a late 2007 S40 2.0 D in December 09, so far very pleased. The car has now done 20k and front tyres need replacing. I noticed wear across the tyre is pretty even, but more pronounced in the centre just as described. Tyres are 205/50 R17 W 93 Pirelli P7, I think I am going to replace with the same. I have found them on web for £236 a pair fitted. Once fitted i will try dropping pressure to say 35psi. Any comments on this and tyre choice. cheers, skri |

Before responding, I went and checked pressure on my S40 2.0d (205/50 R17) and found all tyres at ~ 30psi, the last check was over 2 months ago
- at a main dealer, I have made a commitment to myself to check more regularly, but I guess I'm not alone here! As other people have pointed out, the handbook does indeed call for 220 kPa (32psi) all round for a load of 1-3 persons. I shall not be exceeding this and will monitor careful, wear of new tyres and accuracy of gauges. I have P7's all round and will replace ther front with like for like unless any one can suggest a good case for anything else. rgds |
