Location is important, but I read a few Years back that the exact model can also have a effect as the premiums are often calculated to factor in the real claims that a particular model has generated, if a 'limited edition' had fewer claims then it would attract lower premiums.
As far as location goes, I would have thought that the biggest influence would have been the 'theft ' part of the premium.... the last person with a half modern car being pinched was because the spare key was in the gbox! So maybe it wont make such a differnce in the future, but then the brokers and underwriters need to make money, so they'll load up something else like on street parking!

My own v70 d5 se, 53 plate, 15k miles inc business use for self and swmbo both mid 40s and own/drive other cars.... under £200 for the past few Years, and renewal in March on admiral multicar (to reduce the lads premium) works out at about £185 - cheaper than the pothole tax!

I'd tend to agree with this. I insured a B5 Audi A4 2.8 30v V6 FWD (MUCH less common than the Quattro) for £750 when I had just turned 20. It would appear that I killed a rather rare car! Go try and find one for sale...

I've just renewed my policy on my S60 with one accident (in Oct, my fault) for £482.

seems even your job title can have a big affect.

Having recently taken voluntary early retirement at 52 was planing to get a part time job so put unemployed on my insurance application this added £200 to its cost ! compered to what it was if I left my old job title in,
even changing it to retired added £30
I think insurance in this country is a lottery run by con men.

Does this save much for the youngster. We have a 17 yr old who's just put in for his test which is in a few weeks, dreading the shop around so that he can afford to insure it on his own, at least come June as I need my new volvo to arrive first before he can have it..

The multicar does drop the premium, but a new driver loading will always be high, so in the first couple of Years it might not make so much difference... you'll probably find that the young driver proposer can get a better deal with a couple of older, more experienced named drivers on the policy though. Be careful of 'fronting' a policy with a young driver as a named other user... the companies are wise to it!

We would always want cover to drive his car when it is his, but until my Volvo arrives I'm otherwise carless and even if he passes his test I need it for work so he aint gettin just yet! therefore no fronting here..wouldnt do that had too many people run into me over the years so all up front. Just wondered if you get a sensible discount or does it just make up for Admiral not being the cheapest (who can be all of the time anyway)..

Just got my renewal invitation from my current insurer and it was £30 MORE than last year, so I went online and from just one visit to one comparison site, my best quote was £300 pounds less!
I'll be calling my current insurer but to be honest, if they now match my other much better quotes, I won't be renewing with them anyway.

Happens all the time, please folks dont go back to your previous insurers even if they get close but only because you found it cheaper elsewhere. Otherwise they never learn.

Fully agree with Considered1

Three years ago my insurance was the cheapest I could find.
Last two years the increases were small enough that it wasn't worth the hassle of changing.
This year it looked quite a bit higher so I got a Meercat and saved over £100.

Rang the old insurer to say I didn't want the automatic renewal to go through and they immediately ask if I will stay with them at a reduced premium.

I just DON'T UNDERSTAND why they don't give customers who are prepared to be loyal the best deal in the first place.
Making extra profit by assuming their customers don't care strikes me as being close to dishonesty.
